Trio of Sooners Sweep Big 12 Honors

NORMAN – Fresh off Oklahoma’s record-setting victory to start the 2019 season, three OU gymnasts swept the Big 12 weekly honors, the conference announced Monday.

Senior Brenna Dowell (Gymnast of the Week), junior Jade Degouveia (Event Specialist of the Week) and freshman Olivia Trautman (Newcomer of the Week) each received accolades from the league. The honor was the eighth of Dowell’s career and second overall for Degouveia.

All three were instrumental in leading the Sooners to a 198.050 in their victory over Arkansas Friday night, the highest score to ever be posted in NCAA history on opening weekend. All three contributed to a floor lineup that posted a 49.375 and helped lead the Sooners to a nation-leading 49.625 on vault.

Dowell was named the Big 12 Gymnast of the Week for the second time in her career after competing in the all-around for the first time at the collegiate level. Dowell is ranked No. 7 nationally after posting a 39.550 to take second at the meet. The Odessa, Mo., native tallied a 9.9 on vault and bars and added a 9.875 on beam and floor. Dowell’s beam score was a career high as she made her collegiate debut on the event.

Degouveia earned her second career Big 12 honor and first recognition as Event Specialist after setting a career high on both vault and floor. With one of five 10.0 start values in the OU vault lineup, the Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., native nailed her Yurchenko 1.5 for a 9.95. On floor, the junior added a 9.825.

In her collegiate debut, Trautman shined as she competed on three events to earn her first career Big 12 weekly honor. The Champlin, Minn., native took home a share of the floor title with a 9.95. Trautman added another score of 9.9 as the leadoff on beam and tallied a 9.850 on her Yurchenko 1.5 on vault. Trautman currently ranks first in the nation on floor.

The Sooners return to the friendly confines of Lloyd Noble Center for their home opener Friday, Jan. 11, against No. 5 Georgia. The meet is set for a 6:45 p.m. CT start.
