NORMAN – The Sooners concluded the fall tournament season at home in the Norman Open, an ITF Futures tournament and the first of its kind in the state of Oklahoma.
OU was led by Spencer Papa, Mason Beiler and Ferran Calvo, who made runs to the main draw’s round of 16.
Papa won his opening match against Maxime Cressy of France and UCLA, 6-3, 7-5, to set up a round of 16 meeting with his former teammate and Sooners’ All-American Alex Ghilea (ROU).
Ghilea came out on top of a wild, three-set match that came down to a tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3), to move on. Fittingly, Papa and Ghilea were doubles partners during OU’s run to the NCAA finals in 2016.
Ghilea’s singles run was ended in the quarterfinals, but the Romanian is still alive in doubles with partner Jordi Arconada and awaits a semifinal matchup.
Beiler was a qualifier, winning three matches to earn a spot in the main draw. In qualifying, Beiler defeated Dylan Bednarczyk (CAN), 6-1, 6-4, in the opening round, then gave up just one game en route to a 6-1, 6-0, victory over Juan Jose Mateus Rubiano of Colombia in the second. The freshman held on to win a three-setter over Joshua Howard-Tripp (RSA), 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to move into the main draw.
Beiler’s first-round win came in another three-set match, where he beat David Fox (GBR), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. His run came to an end in the round of 16, where he fell to Great Britain’s Ryan Peniston, 6-2, 6-2.
Three of Beiler’s four victories at the Norman Open came over current and former collegiate players: Bednarcyzk is a junior at Oklahoma State; Howard-Tripp plays for Arkansas; and Fox was a 2016 graduate of the University of Denver. Peniston is a Memphis alumnus.
Calvo held on to win a three-set match over American Paul Oosterbaan, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3, in the first round. Calvo’s run was ended by Andrew Watson (GBR), 7-5, 6-2, in the round of 16.
OU players picked up several more wins in the qualifying draw. Freshman Taine Bernhard advanced the second round of qualifying with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Canada’s Sebastian Zapata.
Stefano Tsorotiotis defeated current Oklahoma State player Mathieu Scaglia (FRA), 6-3, 7-5, in the qualifying draw. Jochen Bertsch held strong to defeated South Florida alum Justin Roberts (BAH), 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-0.
In doubles, Bakshi and Bertsch outlasted Beiler and Tsorotiotis in an opening-round match that came down to the wire. Beiler and Tsorotiotis struck first to win the first set, 7-6 (4), before Bakshi and Bertsch took the second frame, 7-6 (4), and send the match to a tiebreaker. Bakshi and Bertsch came out on top of the breaker, 1-0 [10-5].
