Oklahoma Sooners

The Monday newsletter: It’s Bama! | OU Sports Extra

I remember calling one of my good friends during a drive back from Stillwater in 2013.

Earlier in the day, Oklahoma’s last-minute score helped the Sooners beat Oklahoma State in dramatic fashion.

“Who will Oklahoma play in the bowl game?” he asked me. I told him, “It looks like Alabama.”

Silence on the other end. I knew he didn’t like the matchup.

Meanwhile, I heard OU’s players were ecstatic about the pairing. They wanted their shot at the Crimson Tide.

All OU fans know the story. Enter quarterback Trevor Knight, who had his best college game, and the Sooners left the Sugar Bowl with a 45-31 victory over Alabama.

The Sooners were around 16-point underdogs in that 2013 season contest. They opened as 14-point underdogs on Sunday for this year’s contest.

Pride of Rejoice Christian

After last year’s Big 12 championship win over TCU, I walked over to where Oklahoma player’s parents were stationed and met with Baker Mayfield’s parents.

On Saturday, I saw a mother and father wearing No. 38 jerseys. I walked over and discovered they were walk-on Bryan Mead’s parents.

I introduced myself and told them I’ve enjoyed watching him play for the Sooners. Mead is a graduate from Rejoice Christian in Owasso.

Mead has played in all 26 games of his OU career, primarily on special teams. But on Saturday, he got some reps at inside linebacker when Curtis Bolton had to leave the field after looking like he was dealing with cramps.

Mead is taking advantage of his opportunity and now has two Big 12 championship rings.

A rampaging herd

Saturday marked the third time I’ve covered an Oklahoma game at AT&T Stadium.

While Texas looked like it had more fans, it wasn’t as heavily swayed to the burnt orange as much as I thought it would be. OU was well-represented.

My favorite part? When the gates opened and fans stormed to their standing room only spots in the end zone. It was like the running of the bulls.
