NORMAN – Oklahoma fans got their first look at Lon Kruger’s 2018-19 squad on Thursday as the Sooners topped Pittsburg State, 92-58, in their lone exhibition of the season.
Twelve Sooners saw double-digit minutes as Kruger made sure his entire team received crucial game experience. Ten players scored at least five points, including three Sooners in double figures.
“I thought our guys really did a good job of transferring what they’re doing in practice to a game situation,” said Kruger. “I thought defensively we were pretty locked in on every possession and didn’t give up any straight line drives or open looks. Offensively, we moved the ball well, pushed it, attacked and made good plays for each other. Overall, for a first time out there were a lot of good things but a lot of things to build from.”
Oklahoma was paced by 12 points and 13 boards from sophomore Brady Manek. Coming off of a strong freshman campaign, Manek sunk three 3-pointers in 17 minutes on the floor.
Center Jamuni McNeace poured in 15 points to go with six boards and five blocks. The fifth-year senior liked what he saw from his teammates in their season debut.
“I was impressed – everybody went out there and competed hard,” said McNeace. “Especially with Brady (Manek) out there and Miles (Reynolds) came out there and competed a whole bunch. It was nice seeing everything that we’ve been working on put together, and finally getting to showcase a little something.”
The Sooner defense held the Gorillas to 24.3 percent shooting (17-of-70) and outrebounded PSU, 64-38.
The Sooners open regular season play Friday, Nov. 9 at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. CT on Fox Sports Oklahoma.
