NORMAN – For the fifth year in a row, the Oklahoma men’s gymnastics team topped the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) Preseason Coaches Poll.
“We’re honored to be viewed as the preseason No. 1 team,” head coach Mark Williams said. “We look forward to the beginning of our competition season in January to continue to meet that expectation.”
After winning their 12th national championship in program history and fourth consecutive, the Sooners received 419 points and 19 of the 20 possible first place votes. Stanford sits in second place with 390 points, Illinois comes in third at 366 points. 2018 runner-up Minnesota and Michigan round out the top five with 353 and 324 points, respectively.
Oklahoma is coming off four straight undefeated national championship seasons, having claimed 97 consecutive victories dating back to the 2014 NCAA Championships. The Sooners have also won seven straight MPSF Conference titles.
From their 2018 national championship team, the Sooners return senior Yul Moldauer, who won four individual national titles in 2018, one of which being the all-around. Moldauer earned six All-America honors last season. Other All-Americans senior Levi Anderson (AA, HB), junior Tanner Justus (VT) and senior Genki Suzuki (PH) also return in 2019 for Oklahoma.
The Sooners will face challenging opponents to defend their crown in 2019. OU will start the year at the Rocky Mountain Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. (Jan. 12). Oklahoma will host No. 12 Air Force and No. 14 Arizona State (Jan. 19), No. 6 Ohio State (Jan. 26), No. 5 Michigan (Feb. 23) and No. 3 Illinois (March 9) and will make road trips to take on No. 7 Nebraska and No. 3 Illinois (Feb. 2), No. 9 Iowa (Feb. 9), No. 10 Navy (March 16) and No. 11 California (March 23).
OU will host the MPSF Conference championships for the first time since 2014 on April 6. The 2018 NCAA Championships will be held in Champaign, Ill., on April 19 and 20.
