NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team closes out the fall season with the Norman Open, held at the Headington Family Tennis Center beginning Sunday.
The men’s and women’s USTA Pro Circuit event is the first of its kind to be in the state of Oklahoma. The Headington Family Tennis Center played host to a women’s event in November 2017, with singles champion Danielle Collins going on to crack the top 30 in the WTA rankings.
“This tournament is a huge opportunity for our players to compete against professional players and represent our program at a high level,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “It’s really special to be able to have professional and international players come to Norman to pursue their dreams in a tournament that is the first step to becoming a top-level player.”
Over 200 players will convene in Norman for the event, with eight Sooners are set to compete. Camila Romero, Martina Capurro, Oleksandra Korashvili, Laura Rico-Garcia, Skyler Miller, Kianah Motosono, Ivana Corley, Jasmine Asghar will all play singles, and Korashvili and Asghar will team up to play doubles.
Former Sooner Lily Miyazaki will also be in action at the tournament.
During the fall season, OU players combined for 56 singles wins, with newcomer Capurro leading the team with 10. Corley and Asghar combined for 11 doubles victories, including a 3-1 mark against ranked opponents.
Norman Open action is set to begin Sunday morning.
