NORMAN – The Oklahoma women’s tennis team returns to action this weekend at the Marliss Gruver Memorial Tournament, hosted by Auburn University.
Freshmen Laura Rico-Garcia and Kianah Motosono, along with sophomores Camila Romero and Martina Capurro will represent the Sooners at the tournament.
The event features four singles flights of singles and two flights of doubles, with consolations in all draws. The competition includes players from Arkansas, Georgia State, Kansas, Miami, Ole Miss and host school Auburn.
The four Sooners have been placed in a different flight for singles action. Capurro opens the tournament with No. 1 seed Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami in Flight 1. In Flight 2, Romero will face Isolde De Jong (Ole Miss) in her first match. Motosono takes on Georgia State’s Andreea Stanescu in the first round in Flight 3; and in Flight 4, Rico-Garcia is set for a matchup with Annabella Bowen (Auburn).
Both of OU’s doubles teams will compete in Flight 2, with Capurro and Romero forming one duo and Motosono and Rico-Garcia joining forces. Capurro and Romero have compiled a 5-2 record, including a semifinal run at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, while Motosono and Rico-Garcia are 2-1 on the season. Should both sets of Sooners win two matches, they will face each other in the Flight 2 final.
Tournament action begins Friday at 9 a.m. CT.
