Sooners Battle to the End at No. 11/11 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas   Oklahoma battled to the end against No. 11/11 Texas on Wednesday night, but came up short as the Longhorns defeated the Sooners, 73-63.

Freshman Madi Williams added 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while grabbing six rebounds off the bench to lead OU. Freshman Taylor Robertson scored 13 points and recorded a career-high five steals, while sophomore Mandy Simpson added 10 points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists. 

The Sooners (5-9, 1-2 Big 12) trailed by as many 12 points midway through the third quarter, but rallied to make it a one-possession game in the final frame.

Back-to-back layups from Robertson and Tatum Veitenheimer capped a 12-2 run t hat cut the Texas (13-2, 3-0 Big 12) lead down to two points early in the fourth quarter, but the Sooners would miss their next seven shots to allow the Longhorns to stretch their lead.

Destiny Littleton led the Longhorns with 15 points and picked up five rebounds, while Joyner Holmes earned a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Danni Williams hit three of Texas’ four 3-pointers and finished with 11 points, while Jatarie White added 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

OU jumped out to a 20-16 lead after the first quarter as the Sooners posted a .500 field goal percentage in the opening stanza. The Sooners used a pair of 3-pointers from Robertson and Williams in the first quarter to extend their lead.

The Sooners controlled the lead throughout much of the second quarter, but Texas closed the first half on an 8-0 run to grab a seven-point halftime advantage.

Texas outshot the Sooners, .467-.413, from the field and edged OU on the glass, 47-30. The Sooners finished with 12 assists and recorded 11 steals against the Longhorns. Texas scored 42 points in the paint and added 19 second chance points, while OU scored 13 points off of Texas’ 18 turnovers. 

Robertson tied the school record for most consecutive games with a 3-pointer to begin a season, matching the mark set by Aaryn Ellenberg to open the 2010-11 season. The McPherson, Kan., native has made 59 3-pointers this year, which already ranks third on OU’s freshmen records list.

The Sooners return home on Sunday to face West Virginia. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. CT inside Lloyd Noble Center and tickets are available here. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Southwest.
