NORMAN — The Oklahoma men’s and women’s cross country teams will aim to qualify for the NCAA Championships on Friday at the 2018 NCAA Midwest Regional, held at Newman Golf Course in Peoria, Ill.
The regional is one of nine taking place this weekend, with other events taking place in Terre Haute, Ind. (Great Lakes Region); University Park, Pa. (Mid-Atlantic Region); Provo, Utah (Mountain Region); Buffalo, N. Y. (Northeast Region); Tallahassee, Fla. (South Region); College Station, Texas (South Central Region); Rock Hill, S.C. (Southeast Region); and Sacramento, Calif. (West Region).
The top two teams from each region earn an automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Championships, scheduled for Nov. 17 in Madison, Wis. An additional 13 teams will earn at-large bids to finalize the 31-team field for both the men’s and women’s championships.
After teams have been determined, 38 individuals are selected to compete for both championships. The top four finishers at each regional who are not on an advancing team are automatically selected, joined by two additional at-large athletes.
The Sooners head to the regional after the women took sixth and the men took seventh at the 2018 Big 12 Championship. OU was led by an All-Big 12 performance from freshman Haley Herberg, who placed third in her first Big 12 Cross Country Championship with a time of 20:05.9.
