OU Set for ITA Central Region Championships

NORMAN – The Oklahoma men’s tennis team is back in action Thursday at the ITA Central Region Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa.

The tournament field features 14 schools and over 100 student-athletes from the Central Region. Singles and doubles finalists will punch their tickets to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, held in Surprise, Ariz., Nov. 7-11.

Nine Sooners will be participating in the event: No. 16 Alex Bakshi, No. 34 Ferran Calvo, No. 70 Jake Van Emburgh, Mason Beiler, Stefano Tsorotiotis, Taine Bernhard, Max Stewart, Jochen Bertsch and Matt Rodriguez.

At last year’s regional, Calvo and Bakshi both made runs to the singles round of 16. In doubles, Calvo and Van Emburgh advanced to the quarterfinal. The duo will team up once again this weekend, marking their first outing together in doubles this season.

The Sooners’ other doubles teams will be Bakshi and Tsorotiotis; Bertsch and Stewart; and Florida freshmen Rodriguez and Beiler.

Redshirt senior Spencer Papa will be making his fall debut at the Waco Futures, beginning Saturday.

Draws for both tournaments will be released at a later time.

Live video and scoring will be available for the ITA Central Region Championships. For more information on the event, visit the tournament hub.
