NORMAN Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray and running back Kennedy Brooks shined in Oklahoma’s 52-27 road win at TCU on Saturday, and on Monday were named the Big 12’s Offensive Player and Newcomer of the Week, respectively, in a vote by media who cover the league.
Murray tied Baker Mayfield’s single-season OU record by collecting his fourth Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week award after engineering a 536-yard offensive day against a Horned Frogs team that entered the weekend ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in total defense (311.8) and scoring defense (20.2 ppg). The redshirt junior was 19 for 24 through the air (79.1 percent) for 213 yards and four touchdowns, and ran nine times for 51 yards.
Murray has accounted for 30 touchdowns on the season (25 passing) against just four turnovers (three interceptions). He has thrown for at least three touchdown passes in each of the last six games, and has thrown for at least four in each of the last three contests (14 during the three-game span).
Brooks propelled the offensive output by churning out a career-high 168 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 rushes (9.3 average). His rushing total was the highest by an OU freshman since Samaje Perine ran for 427 yards against Kansas in 2014 to set the FBS single-game record. Brooks didn’t register a carry in the first quarter but found the end zone on a 21-yard run to put the Sooners up 21-7 early in the second period. He finished the day with six runs of at least 11 yards (11, 14, 21, 22, 22 and 43) and caught two passes for eight yards. Brooks entered the day with 192 rushing yards on the season.
The Big 12 weekly award is the first of Brooks’ career, and the first newcomer-of-the-week honor this season for the Sooners, who have claimed eight Big 12 weekly honors in their seven games. Linebacker Kenneth Murray was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after the Army game and linebacker Curtis Bolton was named Defensive Player of the Week after the Florida Atlantic contest. Kicker/punter Austin Seibert earned the special teams award following the Iowa State game.
No. 8/8 Oklahoma (6-1, 3-1 Big 12) plays host to Kansas State (3-4, 1-3 Big 12) on Saturday at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium as part of homecoming weekend. The game will start at 2:30 p.m. CT and be televised on FOX.
