Finding the weak points of the Oklahoma Sooners defense is huge for Texas football to pull off the upset in the Red River Rivalry.
Red River is set to be the most impactful game around the country in Week 6, featuring the No. 7 ranked Oklahoma Sooners and No. 7 ranked Texas football. The Texas State Fairgrounds and Cotton Bowl in Dallas is going to get up for ESPN College Gameday’s appearance in the first top 25 ranked Red River Shootout since the 2012 campaign.
Oklahoma has been at the top of the college football world since the 2012 season, at least most times, but the Longhorns are finally getting to where this program expects to be. The lofty standards set by the Texas football program could finally look to be fulfilled by second-year head coach Tom Herman.
To get past the ultra-elusive former Texas A&M Aggie under center in Kyler Murray, Texas football will need to pull out all the stops and utilize every weapon possible. A key weapon on the offensive side of the ball for the Horns is leading junior wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey. Up to this point, Humphrey is leading the Horns in most relevant stat categories for wide receivers.
Humphrey and fellow junior wide receiver Collin Johnson could be game changing pass-catchers for the Horns, given the mismatch they present against the Oklahoma cornerbacks. The versatility of Humphrey and the size mismatch of Johnson, at 6-foot-6, can give the Sooners trouble in the secondary given the trouble they’ve had against teams inferior to the Horns earlier this season.
Herman needs to utilize every bit of the value that Humphrey presents, even if it means giving him some looks in the wildcat formation or even some jet sweeps. He can torch this Oklahoma defense that even had trouble shutting down the Baylor Bears last week.
A lot of this pressure will fall on the play-calling for the Horns, but that’s nothing new. The rhythm of the offense has been much better than last year and that could be due to Herman taking the play calling duties over, but that’s not confirmed. This game has the type of potential for Humphrey to get over 100 total yards and two touchdowns.
