Scouting West Virginia
Record: 8-2, 6-2 Big 12
Best player: Will Grier is likely to join Kyler Murray in New York at the end of the season as a Heisman Trophy finalist. He ranks fourth in the country with 333 passing yards per game, and ranks fifth with 33 passing touchdowns. His quarterback rating trails only Murray and Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
The case for West Virginia: Grier could have a post-Thanksgiving feast against OU’s defense. The Sooners have given up more passing yards per game (302) than any team in Big 12 play, and they rank at or near the bottom of the league in several defensive categories. The Mountaineers haven’t lost a home game this season.
The case for Oklahoma: Murray and the Sooners can score as good or better than just about any team in the country. In fact, OU ranks first nationally with 49.5 points per game. Nothing suggests OU’s defense will hold up, especially against an offense like West Virginia’s, but a Heisman moment could be had for Murray if the Sooners prevail. Oklahoma has won 19 consecutive true road games, the longest streak in the nation.
