Getting to know the newest Oklahoma Sooners

NORMAN Okla. — The second edition of Early Signing Period is here, and the Sooners have started to ink their 2019 class. For the second straight year since its installment, they’re doing so while getting ready for the College Football Playoff.

“Well, we got some good practice at it last year,” said head coach Lincoln Riley. “You know, I think last year was different for everybody with the Early Signing Period and then certainly with all that goes on in preparing for a playoff game. It’s a lot, but I think we were a little bit more prepared going in this year, knew what to expect. Our guys have really been putting in the hours, trying to balance getting ready to play a great Alabama team and then getting ready to sign one of the great classes in the country. So it’s been fun, but we’ll look forward to having this day behind us and getting full speed ahead on the semifinal game.”

Their No. 6 overall class is headlined by a pair of Composite five-stars and four inside the Composite Top 100. Nearly two-thirds of the class are of the four-star variety or higher, with seven on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

“Yeah, it’s been a great morning,” Riley said. “It’s obviously an important kind of time for our program, getting ready to play in the College Football Playoff, just coming off another Big 12 Championship and then certainly building for our future, which we’re so excited about. So it’s been a fun morning. There’s been a lot of great additions, certainly had a big jolt of energy here a few minutes ago [with Jeremiah Criddell committing]. But proud of all these guys that have signed and certainly thrilled for what the future looks like for Oklahoma football.”

OU mixes in a pair of JUCO linemen among a group featuring players that hail from 11 different states. Texas leads all those, with seven players coming from the Lone Star State.

“Honestly, how unselfish they’ve all been [has impressed me the most],” Riley said. “I mean, we’ve got some of the elite players in the country coming, and a big selling point is these guys wanted to be able to play and win championships together. And that’s how great classes start, you know, and we’ve found a great balance here between everything is always going to be team first here. That’s always going to be the mentality. That’s why this place has been so successful. But we certainly want guys to have individual goals, and I think you’ve seen the last few years our guys have been able to accomplish a number of those. And so it’s a great balance there, and this class has as much potential as any we’ve brought in, a ton of firepower, ton of great potential great leaders, great people that we’re bringing in, and the biggest thing is they want to come compete together and be the very best.”

Now let’s meet them all. This group will continue to be updated accordingly.
