Former Sooners walk-on to spend up to 12 days on billboard in San Jose as part of ESPN promotion

The last time Oklahoma played Alabama in the Sugar Bowl after the 2013 season, Ruben Hunter was a member of the Sooners as a freshman walk-on who earned Oklahoma’s Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year.

On Dec. 29 when the Sooners play the Crimson Tide, Hunter will be watching the game from a billboard in downtown San Jose. The billboard is not far from the site of this year’s College Football Playoff championship game in nearby Santa Clara, California.

Hunter was selected to represent Oklahoma against fans from the three other playoff schools — Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame — as part of ESPN’s College Football Playoff “Who’s In” promotion.

The former Sooners’ linebacker will head up the billboard Dec. 27 and compete against the others for cash and prizes, with social media engagement being one of the ways the winners will be determined.

Nearly 700 fans submitted video testimonials to be picked to represent their schools, with Hunter being the only former player selected.

Hunter played in 24 games in 2015 and 2016, recording 21 tackles.
