Early Signing Period 2019: 4-star DE Marcus Hicks signs with Oklahoma Football

The Oklahoma Sooners have once again gone north of the border and plucked one of the top talents out of the state of Kansas in 4-star DE Marcus Hicks. On Wednesday, he officially became a Sooner after signing a National Letter of Intent.

Oklahoma has done well with the big boys in the trenches from the Sunflower State over the years with stars like Ben Powers, Amani Bledsoe, Jordan Phillips and Geneo Grissom. Standing at over 6’5” and weighing in at 241 pounds, Hicks figures to be the Sooners’ next great Kansan lineman. The No. 2 rated player in KS is also the No. 19 weakside defensive end nationally. During his recruitment he was offered by Florida, Ohio State, Texas and others.

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Hicks’ game is his supreme athleticism. He’s not only a standout on the gridiron, he’s a terror on the mat, as is evident here in this clip.

It’s easy to see why Sooner coaches would be high on the Wichita native on that move alone. On the field, he uses his knowledge of leverage to out-skill his opponents, which hardly seems fair when he’s also usually strong enough to simply overpower them. His motor is also one of his strengths, which can often separate the good from the great players at the next level. He doesn’t give up on plays, nor does he take plays off. With the size he’ll be measuring in as a true freshman, he could very well develop into a Bledsoe type of pass rusher.
