The Oklahoma Sooners continue their Cali pipeline with 3-star linebacker Jonathan Perkins. A one time UCLA commit, Perkins verbally committed to OU in April and made it official on Wednesday with a signed National Letter of Intent.
If the San Bernardino native were just a couple inches taller, he’d likely be much more prominent on the national recruiting radar. As it is, Perkins, a 6’ 214-pound backer, makes up for his lack in height with remarkable speed at the line of scrimmage. Along with several west coast programs, he also received offers from the likes of Auburn, LSU and Texas A&M. The No. 64 player in the state of California is also the nation’s 28th ranked outside linebacker — although his home is likely at either the MIKE or WILL.
For a recent Sooner comparison, Perkins looks and plays a lot like Emmanuel Beal. He has a nose for the football, and because he’s not the most physically imposing guy along the front seven, he taps into his speed and quickness to make plays. Still, he’s able to use his size to his advantage as he can more easily slip through the line of scrimmage and beat tackles on the outside by being the lower man. Of course, at the end of the day, he’s still a linebacker, and some of his thunderous hits will quickly serve as a reminder of that.
Oklahoma will be relatively young at linebacker next season, so the competition for playing time will be a fun battle to watch throughout the offseason.
