Early Signing Period 2019: 3-star DT Derek Green signs with Oklahoma Football

The Oklahoma Sooners originally landed the verbal commitment of 3-star DT Derek Green in November of 2017 before he later de-committed in February, citing a family health issue. After taking a couple months off from the recruiting circus, the Jacksonville, North Carolina native decided Norman was indeed the place for him, and on Wednesday he made it official with a signed National Letter of Intent.

From watching his high school film, it becomes quickly apparent just how much of a mammoth Green is at the defensive tackle position. At 6’5” and 290 pounds, he dwarfs the competition with sheer size and brute strength. He’s listed as the 31st best prospect in the state of North Carolina and the No. 48 DT nationally. During his recruitment, he saw offers from Georgia, Tennessee and Vanderbilt.

With his height and mass, he could swell up to a monstrous nose guard for the Sooners, depending on how the future defensive coordinator wants to scheme his personnel. With another 25-30 pounds, Green would measure up almost identically with former Sooner Du’Vonta Lampkin. Time will tell if he can match that level of play when Lampkin was at his best, but if he does, that would go a long way towards resurrecting defense in Oklahoma.
