Texas is planning to use former Kansas coach David Beaty to help the Longhorns prepare for the Big 12 championship game against Oklahoma, coach Tom Herman said Monday.
Herman said Beaty will assist the Longhorns on eliminating glaring offensive and defensive tendencies and signals that might tip off the Sooners.
A source told ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg that Beaty will not be in Austin this week but will talk with Herman by telephone. Beaty and Herman are close friends.
“Coach Beaty can do what he wants to do. I don’t like the precedent of it, bringing in somebody from the league from the same year. But it’s not against the rules. So that’s fine,” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley said Monday.
Beaty, who was fired earlier this month after four seasons with the Jayhawks, coached his final game for Kansas on Friday in a 24-17 loss to Texas.
