College Sports: Will Oklahoma’s defense cost Sooners a playoff berth? Expect problems in regular season finale vs. Will Grier, West Virginia

Tim Cowlishaw, sports columnist for and The Dallas Morning News, answered your questions in a recent mailbag. Below are highlights, edited for clarity:

Will a lack of defense ultimately cost Oklahoma a playoff berth?

Cowlishaw: I think so. They give up 46 to Texas Tech and 47 to Oklahoma State, not to mention 48 to Texas a month ago. Getting rid of Mike Stoops didn’t change much. They don’t stop anybody. That’s going to be a problem in Morgantown against Will Grier.

As good as they’ve looked at times this season, is Texas Tech’s Kliff Kingsbury on the hot seat yet again?

Cowlishaw: I think Kliff is going to survive. Should competitive losses to Oklahoma and Texas really cost him his job? It’s another uneven season that featured some defense early on but not much lately. He’s had injuries at quarterback so the offense isn’t as dynamic as in the past. He needs to find the next Mahomes, and then lack of defense won’t matter quite so much.

College football needs some chaos. What’s your prediction for a shakeup in the CFP rankings within the next few weeks?

Cowlishaw: Michigan losing to Ohio State and West Virginia and Oklahoma splitting a pair of games while Washington State rolls through the Pac-12. Who’s the fourth team at that point? The Buckeyes? The Cougars? The two-loss Sooners (not likely)? Would be fun if Syracuse got the best of Notre Dame Saturday but I don’t expect it.
