College Sports: Why Oklahoma is the Big 12’s ‘only hope’ for the College Football Playoff

Newy Scruggs, sports anchor at NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS-TV) and radio host weekly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Radio Sirius XM 213/202 and, answered questions during a live chat Wednesday. Below are highlights, edited for clarity.

Is Texas making significant progress, or are they right on schedule for where you thought they would be this season?

Scruggs: Texas is on pace of what I thought they would be with Tom Herman. Texas fans always think their team is better than it actually is. I didn’t expect Texas to win the Big 12 title this year.

OU and West Virginia are the only two hopes the Big 12 has for the College Football Playoff. Will either of them be in when it’s all said and done on December 2?

Scruggs: Oklahoma is the only hope the Big 12 has of making the College Football Playoff. I just don’t think West Virginia can beat OU in back to back games. That is what they would have to do to in the Big 12 Championship. I also think the College Football Playoff selection committee only wants to put OU or Texas in their playoff. Call me jaded, but that is my take going all the way back to when the snubbed TCU and Baylor in the first ever CFP final rankings. I see those folks putting in a second SEC team before giving West Virginia a shot in the playoff if the Mountaineers won the Big 12.

Does it surprise you that Kyler Murray is having a just as good, if not better season than Baker Mayfield’s 2017 Heisman campaign?

Scruggs: Kyler Murray was once the national high school player of the year. We all knew he was a very talented football player. He was billed as the next Johnny Manziel. Murray might end up winning the Heisman Trophy this season.

Does anybody in the potential College Football Playoff field have a chance to beat Alabama?

Scruggs: LSU gets a shot this weekend in Baton Rouge. The 7-1 Tigers destroyed the Bulldogs 36-16 at Death Valley this month. Alabama has to face LSU this Saturday. As great as Bama has looked, they have not gone undefeated since the 2009 season when they beat Texas to win the BCS national title.Let that sink in, It was eight years ago the Tide ran the table. This Bama team is good, but LSU and Clemson can beat them.
