Oklahoma signed 22 players Wednesday and jumped to the No. 1 recruiting class in the Big 12 in the process.

The Sooners inked all 19 of their existing commitments heading into the early signing period and added three more, all on the defensive side of the ball: Defensive back Jeremiah Criddell, defensive end Marcus Stripling and safety Ty DeArman.

The class is currently ranked No. 6 by the 247Sports Composite and No. 5 by Rivals.

Headlining the class is a pair of five-star offensive players: Quarterback Spencer Rattler and receiver Theo Wease. Both Rattler and Wease could compete for early playing time.

“Physically, [Rattler] will be as gifted as anyone we’ve brought in here,” head coach Lincoln Riley said. “We don’t sign or recruit many of these guys if we think they are two or three years down the line of being capable of [starting immediately].”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Sooners signed six defensive linemen in this class, including three four-star recruits.

“I think you start talking about the strengths on paper of this class, it’s hard not to start there,” Riley said. “Our top targets throughout the process were the guys we ended up getting.”

Riley managed to sign that group, as well as three four-star defensive backs, without having a permanent defensive coordinator for next season.

“I think they believe in us as a staff,” Riley said. “Guys believe in this program when they’re able to get here and see it with their own eyes. They see where we’re at, which is a great place right now. But I think they also feel, like everybody else in this building, strong about where we’re going.”

Oklahoma now turns its attention to the College Football Playoff, where it will meet No. 1 Alabama on Dec. 29 at the Orange Bowl. After that? Perhaps another big day during the signing period in early February.

“We’ve got a few more still out there,” Riley said. “We’ll have a few more surprises for everybody.”
