Kyler Murray has been gaining ground on Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa in the Heisman Trophy race for the last few weeks, but his performance Saturday against Texas may have been enough to get him over the hump.
Murray finished 25 of 34 for 379 yards and three touchdowns against the Longhorns, leading the Sooners to their fourth straight Big 12 championship.
Meanwhile, Tagovailoa and the Crimson Tide struggled in the SEC Championship Game vs. Georgia. The hero in last year’s national title game against the Bulldogs, Tagovailoa threw two interceptions Saturday evening. He was also inefficient, completing 10 of 25 passes and throwing just one touchdown.
Tagovailoa exited the game with an ankle injury midway through the fourth quarter. He was replaced by Jalen Hurts, who led the game-tying touchdown drive with 5:19 remaining.
Then, after a failed fake punt by Georgia, Hurts put the Tide up 35-28 with 57 seconds remaining. Alabama went on to win the game by the same score.
Here’s some of the reaction around Murray, Tagovailoa and an increasingly tight Heisman race:
