Newy Scruggs, sports anchor at NBC5 in Dallas-Fort Worth (KXAS-TV) and radio host weekly from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on NBC Sports Radio Sirius XM 213/202 and NBCSportsRadio.com, answered your questions Wednesday. Here are some highlights.
Q: Texas seems to play up and down to its competition… are you giving the ‘Horns a shot against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl?
Scruggs: I think Texas will win the Sugar Bowl over Georgia. Bowl games are all about wanting to be there. Last year the Bulldogs were playing in the Rose Bowl and then the national title game in Atlanta. This year, the lost the SEC title game to Alabama and their head coach Kirby Smart was talking about how it was an injustice the Dawgs were not put in the college football playoff. So Georgia is going off the Sugar Bowl thinking they deserved a better fate. On the other side, Texas will be jacked up and ready to enjoy the Sugar Bowl and all that comes with it. So the Longhorns come into the game with a sense of gratitude. I feel like Georgia will show up in New Orleans feeling like they were not rewarded properly. This is what head coach Kirby Smart said, “Obviously, there’s disappointment in (Saturday) night’s result, but there’s also the opportunity to move forward with really a young team and a chance to go on a national stage where our fans, I know, follow us to play in a New Year’s Six bowl game.” Give me Texas to pull off an upset.
Q: Better coaching job this season, all things considered: Matt Rhule at Baylor, or Gary Patterson at TCU?
Scruggs: I did not expect Baylor to make it to a bowl game this season. The Bears lost six games and four of those losses were to ranked teams in the Big 12. The other two losses were to TCU and Duke. I thought before the season they would lose both of those games. Duke and TCU are going to play in bowl games. I think Matt Rhule did a fantastic job this season and I thought he was going to win the Big 12 Coach of the Year award but he didn’t.This season Gary Patterson dealt with a truckload of injuries and the death of his mother in the middle of the season.
Q: Oklahoma vs. Alabama: Are you giving the Sooners a decent shot at knocking off the Crimson Tide?
Scruggs: Kyler Murray is the type of quarterback you need to beat Alabama. Your quarterback has to be able to use his legs to make the first defender miss and extend plays against Alabama. I will give the Sooners a slim shot, not a decent shot, but a slim shot to beat the machine Nick Saban has assembled.
Q: Is Kyler Murray your Heisman Trophy winner, and if so, why?
Scruggs: Kyler Murray plays on a team that has a weak defense. He has to be at his best every game to keep the Sooners in games and win them. Murray doesn’t have a defense like the Crimson Tide or Buckeyes to help him out of bail him out of a turnover. Murray is having a better year for OU than Baker Mayfield did last season when he won the Heisman Trophy. As a guy who grew up a Tide fan, I think Murray was the best player in the country and he had to carry the load for his team. Look at how Bama won the SEC title over Georgia: with their backup quarterback Jalen Hurts. I look forward to seeing Murray win the trophy Saturday night in New York City.
