NORMAN The Oklahoma soccer team will head to Stillwater, Okla. for the first of two Bedlam games this season. The Sooners and Cowgirls will square off Sunday at Neal Patterson Stadium at 7 p.m. CT.

OU is coming off a narrow 2-1 loss to Nebraska in its season opener, while OSU will be playing in its first game of the season after weather caused its Thursday opener to be canceled.

Sunday’s match against Oklahoma State marks the first Bedlam Series opener across all sports in 2018. The non-conference contest will be the first of two showdowns between the Sooners and the Cowgirls this season, with the second taking place on Sept. 30 in Norman. The schools have met twice a year since 2010, and the Sooners have swept OSU in two of the last three seasons. Of OU’s eight wins in the Bedlam series, six have come under seventh-year head coach Matt Potter.

With just three minutes left in Thursday night’s home opener, the Sooners were holding on to a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal in the first half by Ivanna Rivas. However, two quick goals from the Huskers would spoil the night. Nebraska used a header from Faith Carter to tie the game in the 87th minute, before utilizing a free kick off the foot of Brenna Ochoa in the 88th minute to earn the 2-1 win.

The season opener saw plenty of new faces on the field for the Sooners. After battling knee injuries in back-to-back years, redshirt sophomore Lauren Haivala made her first appearance in the Crimson & Cream, starting and playing 82 minutes in her debut. Freshmen Megan Reilly and Olivia Smith were featured in the starting lineup, and freshmen Hailey Davidson and Lauren Tovy saw significant minutes off the bench.

This fall, the Oklahoma soccer team is joined by 11 freshmen in Abigail Bancroft, Cameron Tharp, Chloe Bohanon, Hailey Davidson, Megan McClay, Jackie Stacy, Jasmine Richards, Lauren Tovy, Megan Reilly, Olivia Smith and Paige Thompson will join the Sooners in 2018. Ten of the 11 players hail from the state of Texas with Smith coming across the pond from England.

“Each comes from a competitive club, coached by the best and having played in some of the best atmospheres,” OU head coach Matt Potter said when the class signed in February. “I believe this incoming class will be lively, skilled and their energy will be fun for all Sooner soccer fans to watch.”

The defending Big 12 regular season champion Cowgirls were picked to finish second in the league by conference head coaches. OSU is coming off a 16-4-3 season in which they went 8-1-0 in Big 12 play. Led by All-American forward Haley Woodard, OSU returns 10 players who started at least 12 games last season, and 76 percent of the players who accounted for the Cowgirls’ Big 12-best 45 goals in 2017 are also back.

The Sooners will return to Norman for a pair of games at John Crain Field. OU will face Illinois State on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. CT before hosting Gonzaga on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 3 p.m. CT.
